Made up of 35 members, the Arkansas State Senate is the upper house of a bicameral Arkansas State Legislature. Each member represents a districts of about 83,312 residents, serving 4 year terms not to exceed more than 16 years in either or both legislative chamber. The President of the Senate is the preciding officer of the upper chamber. The major issues facing the legislature are funding of public schools and institutions of higher education, paying for highway and bridge construction, funding health and human services, building and operating state prisons, the State Police and state parks. Primary responsibilities of a Senator include: developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other senators and the house of representatives. While its a part time job, salary for the Arkansas Senate is approximately $39,400 per year plus $150 per day in session.
