A Wisconsin State Senator serves in the upper house of the bicameral Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin has 33 senators, who each represent one district within the state. Each senator represents about 172,333 constituents from their respective districts. Primary responsibilities of a senator include, developing budget packages, making taxation decisions, passing legislation, allocating spending, and redistricting in collaboration with other senators and the house of representatives. Additionally, the senate has the exclusive authority to try officials impeached by the house in addition to authorizing certain executive appointments. Leadership in the senate is guided by the Senate President, who, after being chosen by the majority party caucus, and elected by the entire senate body, is charged with assigning each senator to various committees and leadership positions. A Wisconsin senator serves a four-year term, and no limit on the number of term served. The salary of the position is $50,950 per year in addition to a varying per diem (between $44 and $153, depending upon the distance traveled and whether staying overnight).

Inquire as to whether the position has a primary election before the general election and if the position is partisan or nonpartisan. 2) Complete the required ballot access forms and submit the ballot access forms to the State of Wisconsin Government Accountability Board. The type of ballot access forms to be submitted depend on whether the office you are running for is partisan or nonpartisan. If you plan to run for a partisan office as a partisan candidate, please contact your local party headquarters for more information. If you plan to run as a independent candidates for partisan office, the forms to be filed include a Declaration of Candidacy (GAB-162) and nomination papers (GAB-168). 3) Submit the required ballot access papers to the State of Wisconsin Government Accountability Board. Nomination papers can be filed as soon as April 15th and are due by 5:00pm June 1st (unless June 1st is a holiday or a weekend, then the filing deadline is the next business day) in order to appear on the November general election ballot.
